May 2017

Our club held its March meeting at Clackamas Denny’s Restaurant, we enjoyed a wonderful meal with the Over The Hill Club.

I was glad to see an increase in attendance, thanks to IS John Nerski who sent out a reminder of our meeting.

Since our last meeting several of our members enjoyed a wonderful dinner with the members of the Tualatin Shrine Club. I would like to thank President Noble Richardson and his officers for their hospitality, wonderful companionship and hosting the meal. It was an honor to present Jordan Nerski with his jacket as the Co-Captain representing the players of the West’s team for this year’s East-West Shrine Football Game.

NOBLES THE CLUB NEEDS YOUR HELP WITH THE PARADE SEASON!

We have voted to have a club car in all of the Unit Parades this year, by the time you read this the parade in The Dalles will have come and gone. The following is a list of the parades which have been designated as All Unit Parades:

May 6 Newport
June 17 Sheridan*
June 24 Tillamook
July 4 Canby*
July 29 Newberg
August 5 Baker City*
August 12 Astoria
August 26 Aumsville
November 11 Albany Veterans Day*

I encourage all of the Shurtah Club Nobles who are able to get out JOIN THE FUN by participating in these parades. There are other voluntary parades as well if you would like to go to one of those just let me know and I will see what we can do.

Nobles, I have a couple questions for each of you:

What can we do as a club to increase membership?

What do we need to do to retain our members?

What do we need to do to increase attendance at our meetings?

I am interested in any and all ideas from each of you so please take a few minutes to send me an email or call me with your ideas. It seems to me that there may be more nobles who belong to Al Kader or our Blue Lodges who could become members of the Shurtah Club.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank a couple of our members; IS John Nerski for doing a good job with his responsibilities as our secretary/treasurer. He is also taking care of our patrol cars being sure that they are in good shape for the parade season.

I would also like to thank Noble James Foster, IS Bob Walliker and Lady Kathy for the work they are doing on the committee for the upcoming fund raiser.

If you have not paid your dues for this year please do so, you can send your check to IS John Nerski our Sec/Tres P.O. Box 1577 LaPine, Oregon 97739

As a member of our club feel free to contact me with any suggestions for how we can improve our club. Yes, I am repeating myself, you see I believe very strongly that it is OUR club and each one of us has an obligation or opportunity to help it improve for the betterment of the members. If you have any suggestions, concerns or ideas please let me know. You can contact me by phone or email: (541) 974 -1326 f4knight@comcast.net

Hope to see you at out next meeting April 26, 2017 at the Clackamas Denny’s Restaurant 15815 SE 82nd Ave, Clackamas, Oregon.

April 2017

Our club held its February y meeting at the Clackamas Denny’s Restaurant, where we enjoyed a wonderful meal with the Over the Hill Club.

We had a lower attendance than in our other meetings and I would like to apologize to the membership, I forgot to send an email out as a reminder.

NOBLES THE CLUB NEEDS YOUR HELP WITH THE PARADE SEASON!

We voted to have a club car in all of the Unit Parades this year, I do not know if we were able to do that last year since I am a new member. However, I think that may be a challenge. I have sent out an email to those members on the list that I have requesting that we develop of list of drivers and passengers. Please respond to my email ASAP, I for one do not like to leave things to the last minute and I am sure that neither do you. If you did not get the email please let me know, I found one Noble who was not on my list.

If you have not paid your dues for this year please do so, you can send your check to IS John Nerski our Sec/Tres P.O. Box 1577 LaPine, Oregon 97739.

Speaking of IS John Nerski he was sworn at. I mean sworn in by Marshal Mel De-Hut at our last meeting. So now it is official all of your officers have been sworn in.

March 2017

Our club held its January meeting at Clackamas Denny’s Restaurant, we enjoyed a wonderful prime rib lunch buffet with the Over The Hill Club.

We learned that former FBI Agent IS Howard Clark recently passed into the house not made by hands. His internment will be at 11am on April 28 with the memorial service at the Al Kader Shrine center at 1pm on April 29. Contact IS Bob Walliker for additional information.

I respectfully request that any and all members of the Al Kader Shurtah club that can attend the memorial service do so wearing the club uniform to pay respects to his family.

I would encourage all members to be sure that their club dues are paid for the year. Also, please get your insurance information turned into the Al Kader Office, parade season is rapidly approaching. We will discuss what parades our club are going to be in at our next meeting I would like to have a list of the nobles who are able to commit to driving in the parades. If you are interested, please contact me in person, via email or by phone.

During our last meeting, it was decided to change the license plates on the club patrol vehicles to the Fallen Public Safety Officer License plates.

The Fallen Public Safety Officer License plate was created by the Oregon Legislature in 2009. Money earned from these license plates goes into Oregon Police Memorial Trust Fund. This trust fund is managed by a special committee comprised of law enforcement, fire department, and citizen members. These funds help provide support to the families of fallen safety officers in the State of Oregon.

The idea for the Fallen Public Safety Officer license plate began shortly after the horrific events in Woodburn in December 2008, when a bomb inside a bank killed Woodburn Police Captain Tom Tennant and Oregon State Police Senior Trooper William Hakim. Mary Nunnenkamp, retired from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, began working with Oregon State Representative Matt Wingard to develop legislation to create the license plate. Every May, the Oregon Fallen Law Enforcement Ceremony Memorial recognizes all of the Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. The memorial is located in Salem, Oregon at the Oregon Public Safety Academy. This ceremony is open to the public.

To date more than 180 line of duty deaths have been approved for the memorial wall from as far back as the 1880’s. The memorial honors all aspects of Oregon law enforcement service including city, county, and state police officers; county and state corrections officers; parole and probation officers; and other state and federal law enforcement agents and officers.

The Oregon Firefighters Memorial Wall is also located at the Oregon Public Safety Academy, they hold their memorial ceremony on the fourth Thursday in September each year, this is also open to the public.

I look forward to working with the all of the Shurtah Club Nobles and their ladies to make this another outstanding year.

“As we look to the future, please consider your role in our fraternity and philanthropy and resolve to be as active and involved as possible. You will be better for it, and so will the organization.” Chris L. Smith Imperial Potentate (2017)

See you at out next meeting February 22, 2017 at the Clackamas Denny’s Restaurant 15815 SE 82nd Ave, Clackamas, Oregon.

January 2017

The club held its November meeting recently at the same location at the normal time. I had good intentions on attending, however my furnace had other ideas, so reluctantly I stayed home waiting for the repairman. I recall thinking next month I will be able to attend the clubs meeting.

I have only met a few of the Shurtah Club members, those at the meetings and several during the Haunt where we provided security. I was looking forward to meeting more members of this fantastic club.

I went about mundane household responsibilities, the repairman came did his thing, leaving me with a little less money in my house savings account.

I continued to think about the Shurtah Club during the afternoon, my internal instinct, told me that something was going on. Now, each Noble in the club will understand what I mean by that.

Then it happened, yes most of you guessed it I was nominated and elected High Sheriff. Noble Ken Hall the outgoing High Sheriff sent me an email congratulating me on my successful election.

Now, I have to be honest in over thirty-five years of being involved in the criminal justice work, I never ever wanted to be or had a desire to be the Sheriff!

However, this is different and certainly an honor to serve, guide and work with all of our club members. I know that Noble Ken and the outgoing officers did a great job this year. I am looking forward to meeting all of our members and to another outstanding year. I am glad to know that this club is strong and an integral part of Al Kader Shrine.

The following nobles were nominated and elected to their respective positions:

Noble Forrest Hatch: High Sheriff
Noble Jim Foster: Low Sheriff
IS John Nerski: Secretary/Treasurer
IS Bob Walliker: Chaplain
Noble Ken Hall: Sergeant-At-Arms

On December 28, 2016, these nobles were sworn in by the Assistant Rabban Art Hermanson at the Busters restaurant in Tigard. Please join us for our next meeting at the Clackamas Denny’s January 25, 2017 at 11:30.

2016

High Shirieve Ken Hall
December 2016

All the Masonic bodies elections are over, and this month brings the installations.

Election of Officers for Shurtah for 2017 has been changed to November 30, 2016, at 11:30 am in the Clackamas Denny’s Restaurant, around the corner from the banquet hall.

It is also a time when we evaluate how we did as a club. In November, Shurtah Nobles donated 102 hours to the Widow’s Domain Haunt, not counting the commute time. I asked for Shurtah Nobles to step up for this worthy cause, and Shurtah came through. We had a full staff on hand for all shifts at the Haunt.

Our last parade of the year was the Veteran’s Day parade in Albany, OR. We had two Shurtah cars in the parade, and both cars were full of Nobles. There were 40,000 spectators at the parade, and 7,000 participants. What a wonderful tribute to all those who have served in our Armed Forces. Thank you all!

Throughout the year, Shurtah participated in all the all-unit parades, all the Club Meetings, the Shrine Socials, the Shrine Stated Meetings, the Unit/Club Head Meetings, the East/West Shrine Game and Parade in Baker City, OR, and had representatives at the East/West Shrine Game Committee meetings, and at the Imperial Session. Thank you Nobles for the bottom of my heart!

Shurtah as a club couldn’t have done more. The Club is strong, and as a Club we have become an integral part of Al Kader Shrine Center.

Being the end of the year, it’s time to send in your $10 dues, if you haven’t already. As with any Club or Unit, we have a core group of dedicated Nobles who attend everything. If you’re working, and can’t attend our meetings, we excuse that, but we do need every Shurtah Noble to send in his dues. Our only fundraiser this year was the sale of the Ultimate Vacation Raffle Tickets, where we will receive $1 per ticket sold.

As I write this, the Shurtah Election of Officers hasn’t been held. I want to thank each and every Shurtah member for allowing me to be your High Shireve for 2016, and for helping with all that was asked of our Club. Get behind your 2017 Officers, and give them your full support. It was an honor for me to serve you!

High Shirieve Ken Hall
November 2016

As our Shurtah group enters November, our next adventure is the Veteran’s Parade on November 11th, in Albany, OR. Please plan on joining us. This year we’re planning on having two Shurtah cars in the parade, and we hope to have six Shurtah members in those cars. Our newest car, a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria should have the license plates we ordered by then. This parade is always a very heartwarming event, as we’re grateful for the service of our veterans, and also see many wonderful kids that have been helped by our Portland Shriners Hospital. We get stories of people who are now adults who wouldn’t be holding their jobs without the help they received at Shriners Hospitals.

Not only in November do we elect our Officers in our Blue Lodges, November is also our Shurtah Election of Officers, which will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd, at the Clackamas Denny’s, at 11:30 am. If you have someone that you’d like to nominate for any office in Shurtah, come to the meeting so you can nominate them. My thoughts on electing Officers in your Blue Lodge or Shurtah is to not be impressed by money, followers, degrees, or titles; but be impressed by kindness, integrity, humility, and generosity.

This year has been all that we could ask for our Club. We participated in all the all-unit parades, had representatives at Imperial Session, and we had representatives at every Stated Meeting and Unit Head Meeting of Al Kader Shrine. We sold tickets for the Ultimate Vacation Raffle around the state, and at the State Fair and Octoberfest in Mt. Angel. We also provided the very much needed security for the Widow’s Domain Haunt. What a pleasure it was for us to do that. At each of these events, our Shurtah Nobles were at their best, and represented Al Kader Shrine in the best possible light.

Don’t forget our Shrine Fall Ceremonial on November 11 and 12th, and to get your reservations in for the Chief Rabban Night on November 19th. It promises to be an old fashioned hootenanny, with some down home fun. The Shrine will have BBQ Brisket, Chicken and Ribs with delicious sides, country strawberry shortcake and free beer. The dance and music will be on the “Sadie Hawkins” theme, and the Ultimate Vacation Raffle will be at 8pm. The cost is $25 for the evening, and a travel agent will be present if you want to sign up for the Potentates trip.

We perform miracles every day at our Portland Shriners Hospital. Do I believe in miracles? I want to leave you with this thought. We live on a planet that circles around a ball of fire next to a moon that moves the sea; so yes, I believe in faith and miracles.

High Shirieve Ken Hall
October 2016

With the beautiful leaves of fall, we’re reminded that Shurtah will provide security for the Widows Domain Haunt. The Haunt will be Thursday, through Saturday, October 20-22nd, and also Thursday through Monday, October 27-31. Hopefully, we can have four Shurtah members on duty at all times during the open hours of the Haunt. Please let me know what days you can volunteer, and I’ll let you know the shift start and end times as more information becomes available. We want the Haunt to be successful for Al Kader; also safe for everyone who volunteers to help, and the general public who comes to support us in our work.

We feel for our Shurtah Noble, Dana Tawney, who lost his wife Judi to cancer. Her service was held on Sunday, September 18th, at the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church in Portland. We’re here for Dana and his family, and they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Our October meeting will be at the Clackamas Denny’s, at 11:30 am, on Wednesday, October 26th. We’ll discuss plans for our last parade on November 11th, in Albany, Oregon. I already have a list for Shurtah members who want to take part, so let me know if you’d like your name to be added to the list. Also, at this meeting, we’ll discuss plans for 2017. We’ll have Election of Officers for Shurtah on November 23rd, so bring your thoughts and ideas if you’d like to see any changes in our Club.

On September 1st and 2nd, Jim Foster and I traveled to the Oregon State Fair to work in our Al Kader Ultimate Vacation Raffle booth. We did pretty well selling tickets, and had a good time doing it. We didn’t “stand a candle” however to Low Shireve Fred and Lady Reba Hardin, who worked many days selling tickets for our Shurtah Club. My heartfelt thanks go out to Fred and Reba; and to Jim Foster, as he also volunteers at our Portland Shriners Hospital. I do want to thank Shurtah member and Potentate, IS John Nerski, and our Potentate’s Rep, Art Hermanson, Assistant Rabban, along with Past Potentates, IS Bob Walliker, and IS Art Pratt for their attendance to our meetings, and their outstanding support for our Club. Thanks also to all of our Shurtah Nobles who attend our monthly meetings.

September 2016

As I write this, we’ve just come back from the East/West Football Game in Baker City, which again this year was a resounding success! At the auction for the steer, several Shrine Clubs bought the steer, and donated it back, raising money for our beloved hospital. IS Greg Jenkins purchased the steer for $2000. It was a beautiful steer, and you’ll see a picture of the steer along with Noble Bob Barrowcliff, who petted and talked to the steer. Our dream of having two Shurtah cars in the Baker City parade was fulfilled, thanks to Noble Bob Barrowcliff, who drove one of the Shurtah cars, while I drove the other. Noble Will Benson of Baker City detailed the outside of our latest car, hooked up our siren, mirror strobes, and rear tail light strobes, and PA system. As Noble Will is one of our Shurtah nobles, he was able to drive our newest car in the parade. Lieutenant Will Benson was a Shriners Hospital patient growing up, and he’s made us proud, heading the Parole and Probation Division of the Sheriff’s Department in Baker County.

Since our August parades are over, parade season is almost over. We have parades in Burns and Pendleton on September 10 th , if Shurtah wants to participate. Our next all-unit parade is in Albany on November 11 th .

My goals for Shurtah for this year have almost been met. I prayed that we could get the light bar on the second car by my birthday, which was July 8 th . On that very day, the light bar was installed; also, I prayed that we would have both cars in Baker City for the East/West parade. We did have both cars in the parade, so another prayer was answered. My hope now is that we sell enough tickets for the Shrine Vacation Raffle to replenish our Shurtah account for the year, and to get our participation at our meetings up to 15 each meeting.

Noble Todd Weedman, of Todd’s Automotive, and who is our High Priest and Prophet, recharged the air-conditioner on our new Shurtah car, and Ryan Miller, of Miller Insurance Agency donated $100 toward the license and DEQ of that car. I give these men my heartfelt thanks, as I know they want to help us as we support the wonderful kids in our Shrine Hospitals.

Every Noble in our Shurtah group has a right to be proud for your service to your community. Threats and disrespect toward Police Officers will not be tolerated. Because of the recent events which have occurred, our citizens have been made aware of the problem, and will be more likely to stand up for, and help protect our Officers in the future. Officers give simple commands, which have to be followed.

This month I have a lot of people to thank. First, I want to thank Chief Wyn Lohner, Baker City Police Chief, who donated the light bar for our second car.

Next, I want to thank Lieutenant Will Benson, who is a Shurtah member, and is in charge of the Parole and Probation Office in Baker City, who facilitated the installation of our light bar. His professional installer, Chris, installed the light bar, and before we went to Baker City, Lieutenant Will said the job would be done in two hours. Chris installed a module and control panel for the lights, so now our strobes work also. We didn’t have a cigarette lighter receptacle to charge our cell phones, and now we have a three plug receptacle. I want to thank Jim Foster for traveling to Baker City with me to share the driving. This car has the full police package, including heavy duty brakes, and the Police Interceptor engine. All we need now is to have the air conditioner recharged before Baker City, and a rear seat, as it now has the molded fiberglass prisoner seats.

Al Kader Shurtah Club - Parade Car

I want to thank the following who rode in our June and early July parades. They are Jim Foster, Jay Carey, Bob Walliker, and Robert Barrowcliff.

Our Shurtah members grieve for the five Officers shot down in Dallas. The real heroes in this country are our active and retired Peace Officers, and our Shurtah members who are also veterans. Our veteran members are double heroes in my book, and I thank our Shurtah and Shurtah veterans for their service. God Bless and Protect America!

We will have both cars in Baker City for the East/West Game parade. I need Shurtah volunteers to participate. We have the capacity for six in the cars now, but by parade time, we hope to have a capacity of eight. This month, we have the Baker City parade on August 6th, the Astoria parade on August 13th, and the Aumsville parade on August 27th.

Our Shurtah meeting for August is August 24th, 11:30 am, at the Clackamas Denny’s. Our support is growing, the meetings are better attended, and Shurtah members are offering their help. The Club has a lot to offer, and if you aren’t participating, you are missing out. The picture is of our second car with the lights flashing. If you aren’t participating, reply to this e-mail and let me know if there is anything I can do to make it so you can participate.

July 2016

July finds us in parades in Philomath on July 9th, the Troutdale parade on July 23rd, and the Newberg Parade on July 30th. Newberg Lodge #104 has invited the Shurtah Club to hamburgers and hotdogs after the parade at their lodge.

I need to thank Nobles Jay Carey and Jim Foster for participating in the parades with me, and to Forrest Hatch for obtaining a newer light bar for our second Shurtah car. IS John Nerski informs me that a Noble has offered to install the light bar.

We are now owners of a third Shurtah car, and it is being refurbished. As any used car, we need to go through the brakes, battery, and steering components, etc. to be sure it is safe, and ready for service.

Earlier in the year, we voted to donate $125 for a ¼ page Shurtah ad in the East/West Shrine game program, and our Secretary, Noble JB Dick, has sent in the money. Hopefully, we will attract other Shriners who are or were Peace Officers to join our ranks.

For those of you who have not ridden in the parades, you are really missing out on a lot. You get to see first-hand the appreciation of parents whose kids have been helped by Shriners Hospitals, and also adults that were helped. Al Kader Shrine gets many “thumbs up”, and smiles from the by-standers. If the sideliners at the parade don’t warm your heart, it’s time to check your pulse.

I humbly ask for more Shurtah Club Nobles to attend our meetings, and participate in our parades. If we are going to have three parade vehicles, we need drivers and riders. All the units and clubs that participate in the parades collectively do more to put Al Kader before the community than any commercials.

See you on July 27th, at the Clackamas Denny’s, at 11:30am. Our Shurtah Club needs you!

Since summer has arrived, we’re busy with parades this month, starting with the Lebanon Festival on June 4th. The parade starts at 11 am, but we need to be at the Walmart Supercenter in Lebanon by 9 am. Next is the St. Helens Parade on June 18th, where we need to be at Emmert Motors in St Helens by 10 am. Then on June 25th is the Tillamook Parade, where we need to be at Goodspeed Park in Tillamook at 8 am. Please let me know the parades you would like to attend.

Shurtah generally goes dark during the months of June, July, and August. At the time of writing this column, we haven’t voted to go dark yet, but Shurtah is invited to attend the OTH group during the summer at the Clackamas Denny’s at 11:30 am on the fourth Wednesdays. I’m willing to attend any of their meetings if we have anything we need to discuss for Shurtah.

We extend a hearty welcome to Jim Foster, our newest member. Jim rode with us in the Newport parade on May 30th, so he has already jumped in to working with our club. I’m enclosing two pictures for our visit to the Portland Police Museum where IS Bob Walliker met one of the creatures from the TV show Grimm. Also, Jay Carey and Bob Walliker wound up in the museum jail. They were having a good time, so were reluctant to leave.

Parade Season is here! With two successful parades under our belt, at The Dalles, and Newport, we’re ready to promote Al Kader Shrine throughout the summer with our participation. Our Shurtah police car gets noticed, and remembered by the adults and kids watching the parade, and builds respect for Police Officers, and Al Kader Shrine. Give me a call or e-mail if you’d like to ride in the Shurtah car during any parade. We can provide transportation from the Shrine Center.

Our April visit to the Portland Police Museum was very interesting, and we enjoyed seeing the new wall hanging system, which makes it so the pictures can be changed without any holes being put in the walls, and the pictures can easily be rotated to keep the Museum updated. After the Museum visit, we had lunch at the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Pub, where we had an enjoyable time; and made our Shrine presence known with our Fez’s.

Our May meeting will be on Wednesday, May 25th, at the Clackamas Denny’s, beginning at 11:30 am. Please attend our meetings if you’re not working on the meeting day. Bring your thoughts and ideas to our meetings, as we want your input, and you’ll enjoy the food and fellowship.

I still have tickets for the Ultimate Vacation Raffle which we need to get out so they can be sold. Shurtah will possibly get around $1 for every ticket we sell, so be sure to write Shurtah on the back of each ticket. Please take some tickets to sell if you can, as each ticket sold helps Al Kader Shrine.

Our year is off to a good start. We were going to change locations for our meeting, but things worked out to where we will continue holding our meetings at the Clackamas Denny’s, meeting on the fourth Wednesday at 11:30 am. However, this month, instead of our meeting, we will be visiting the Portland Police Museum, 1111 SW 2nd Ave, Portland, OR 97204, on April 27th, at 11 am. Then, after the meeting, we will have lunch at the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery, 206 SW Morrison St, Portland, OR 97204.

Our first parade of the season will be The Dalles Parade on April 23rd. We already have the Shurtah car washed, waxed, and ready to go. If you’d like to ride in the parade, call or e-mail to let me know. Call (503) 653-5676, or e-mail ken-hall@comcast. net. We’re going to have fun with the parades this year!

We are gaining attendance at our meetings, and are well supported by the Shrine. Art Hermanson, Assistant Rabban; who is also the Shurtah Club Potentates’ Rep; attended our January meeting, and he and our Potentate, IS John Nerski, with his lovely wife Pat, attended our February meeting, Please keep our attendance at the meetings growing, by showing up and participating. You’ll be glad you did.

The Al Kader Shrine Shurtah Club meets on the fourth Wednesday at the Clackamas Denny’s at 15815 SE 82nd Dr, Clackamas, OR 97015. We join the OTH “Over the Hill” group who are retired policemen from the Portland metropolitan area, including the Portland Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office, Coast Guard, FBI, and any other law enforcement group in the area; at 11:30 am for a lunch buffet. The OTH provides speakers at no cost to Shurtah. The cost of the lunch is $10 plus a suggested $2 tip. Then immediately following the lunch and meeting of the OTH group, we have the Shurtah meeting. Our meeting lasts from 1 pm until 1:30 pm. We meet monthly, except for November and December, when we’re preparing for the holidays.

If you are a Shriner, and are, or were an Active Peace Officer, we’d love for you to join us.

All members of Shurtah, please join us at all meetings you can attend. We do participate in most Al Kader Shrine Parades, and have a Shurtah car (retired police car) in the parades. Fortunately, this year we have a second car almost ready for participation in the parades.

If any Shurtah member would like to ride in the parades, you are very welcome, but you need to call or e-mail me to be put on the list. I am very serious about building participation at our meetings, and in the parades. I’m asking all Shurtah members to attend the meetings when you can. It’s all about the kids at the Shriners Hospitals, and we want society to know that law enforcement officers care. The men of law enforcement are big hearted individuals who care about protecting their communities, and helping the kids at Shriners Hospitals. Shurtah helps make our Shrine presence known in the community by our participation in the parades.
