East-West Shrine Game Association
Once a year, Oregon's best and brightest Senior football players from the 1A to 4A high schools meet in Baker City to
participate in an all-star football game that is much more than a game. These healthy players are playing for the
children who are patients of Shriners Hospital for Children.
The players learn why they play in this important game, when they visit Portland Shriners Hospital for Children and
meet the children for whom they are playing. This meeting with the children forms bonds between the players and
the patients. The players learn how important their contribution is to these children through interaction and
play, leaving the players with a new understanding of their mission. The players participate with a common goal
and, although they play on two different teams, they are united in their purpose and are only opponents on the field.

The East-West Committee held their Fall meeting
on Sunday, following the Food Caravan in
Wilsonville. The agenda was full, with the majority
of the business dealing with committee reports
for the Game. Additionally, the setting officers
were elected to their second term of their two-year
The highlight of the meeting was the Treasurers
Report, provided by Treasurer Randy Guyer.
The preliminary report showed a significant
increase over last year’s net proceeds to the
Hospital. Barring any unforeseen expenditures, it
is anticipated that the East/West All-star Football
Game will be giving the Shriners Hospital for
Children-Portland an estimated $30,000!
I think it is extremely important to realize that
the committee works year-round in preparing for
the August game. There are four meetings and
countless additional phone calls, emails and face
to face meetings, to make certain that the Game
and the festivities continue. Each Club and Unit
is represented by two voting delegates, who are
on the Board of Directors for the Committee. We
would like to thank each Club and Unit for their
involvement. Your East/West Committee is a
group of very committed individuals who work
diligently in making this successful and productive
for the Hospital.
Our next meeting will be hosted by the Central
Oregon Shrine Club and will be held on January 30th
at 9am at the Bend Masonic Center.

High School football season is winding down with either the
playoffs completed or almost completed. Now is an excellent time
to remind the coaches about the E-W All-star game. The letters
were sent out last month and all the coaches should have them.
Just a friendly reminder to them might be helpful, especially with
everything they have going on. We are looking at having as many
players nominated as possible. The more widespread the
nominations, the more people hear about the Shriners!
At our last committee meeting in October, elections were held,
which resulted in Rodger Hood as chairman, IS Greg Jenkins, 1st
Vice Chair, Bryan Braun, 2nd Vice Chair, Terry Griffith, Secretary,
Randy Guyer, Treasurer and members at large- Gib Thonstad and
Lloyd Thurman. Please check the E-W website for the entire
minutes of the meeting.
Remember our next E/W Committee meeting will be on January
24th in Prineville. This will be our player selection and an exciting
time. The Central Oregon Shrine Club will host an Oasis at the
Prineville Best Western Hotel (this is a change from past years),
with a dinner offering at the Prineville Elks. A breakfast will be
served at the Prineville.
