Virtual Tour of Portland’s Shriners Hospital for Children - Continued

Noble John Smith
June 2016

This is the third in a series of articles by Noble John Smith, who now volunteers at the front desk of our hospital and is a member of the new Hospital Support Club.

Floor 3 – The Inpatient Floor

Many Nobles have not visited Portland’s Shriners Hospital. This, for them, is the third article in a virtual floor-by-floor tour of that house made by Shriners to care for children needing a renewed life.

Exit the elevator and turn right. The first area you see on your left is the “Inpatient Care Unit” (I.P.U). Public access is restricted (for privacy) and must be requested from the Head Nurse (use the phone on the wall by the entry). If you are allowed to enter, on your right is a typical patient recovery room which I.P.U. inpatients use either after surgery or during inpatient treatment. Tour that room then exit the I.P.U. via the same route you entered. Next to the I.P.U. entrance/exit is a comfortable waiting room with floor to ceiling windows offering a partial vista of Portland, the Willamette River and Mt. Hood.

Pictures of Portland’s Shriners Hospital’s corps of volunteer, trained, approved and certified therapy dogs and their handlers are on the hall wall. They often expedite the recovery/rehabilitation process during patient visits. A quiet, pensive place to meditate, the Meditation Room, is on your left as you walk down the hall.

A physical rehabilitation room, an annex to the main rehabilitation room on Floor 4, waits down the main hall and on your left. It is adorned with many types of exercise equipment.

Some patients may need to develop their minds as well as their bodies so the classroom is further down the main hall and on your left. Some hospital patients have created personal art work and it decorates the wall across the hall from the Classroom.

Continue your tour and straight ahead is the game room and offices of the Child Life specialists. The game room is for patients/their family and special visiting groups. It features party space and play things. Here, two volunteer women’s groups (Daughters of the Nile and Ladies Oriental Shrine) hold themed parties (i.e. Birthdays) for the children.

The Hospital accepts patients up to age eighteen and often they and/or their family do not want to play games for younger children, so they have their own room – the “Teen Room.” There they can play video games, quieter games, read, etc.

You will discover more as you walk a few steps through the first double-doorway (often open) - turn left and walk down that hallway - turn left again just before the next set of double-doors (often closed) – walk down that hall until you find the room called Family Quarters. It provides eight guest suites for out-of-town families to stay during their child’s treatment, as well as a kitchenette and dining area.

Retrace your steps to the public elevators and then it is on to Floor 4.

To arrange for a free and more informative personal or group tour, full of Portland’s Shriners Hospital stories and facts, contact the Hospital’s Volunteer Coordinator (503-241-5090).
