I.S. Art Hermanson, Potentate 2018
Potentate's Trip 2018
From the Potentate’s Desk
I.S. Art Hermanson
Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
The East – West Oregon Shrine Football
Game in Baker City is just around the
corner. The last date that you can call
the Al Kader Office to make your hotel
reservations is Friday July 13th. This is
the time of year when Baker City comes
alive with great Shrine events as Al
Kader, Hillah and El Korah descend on
the city. On Thursday, August 2nd, many
clubs gather at their favorite restaurants;
Friday, August 3rd, the morning starts
with breakfast at the RV park; a Cold
Sands at the Sunridge; the Queens &
Co-Captains luncheon at the Sunridge;
then the players BBQ in La Grande;
the Oriental Bands steak feed at the Sunridge (normally followed by the
“Flying Carpet” touring downtown Baker City); and of course, movie night
at the RV park. Saturday morning starts with a great steak breakfast at the
park; a great parade; and the highlight of the entire weekend with the E/W
Football Game that evening.
Under the leadership of our Chief Rabban, Todd Weedman, we continue
to set up our tent at various county fairs to publicize our great fraternity
and Shriners Hospital for Children System. Let’s all make an effort to
spend some time spreading the word. This is just one of the efforts we are
making to encourage increasing our membership. We need to turn the tide
on our declining membership and find more good men who we can add
to our rolls of Shrine Masons. It is easier than ever before to get someone
you know who would be a good Shrine Mason with the referral program.
If you know of someone, either a Mason or just a friend, all you have to do
is log on to the Shriners Village web site, select WebFez and then go to
“Refer a Good Man.” In easy to follow steps, you can make a referral and
help our great fraternity turn the tide on our declining membership.
While we are representing Al Kader at the Imperial Session in Daytona
Beach, from July 12th to July 20th, Illustrious Sir Ron Gamble will be
Finally, Lady Lynne & I hope that you will join us at our next social on the
7th of July, the doors open at 3:00 pm. Our own Al Keggers Brew Club has
brewed a special ale for us to enjoy. We will have BBQ ribs on the Treager
and the traditional picnic fare. So, put this date on your calendar to help us
celebrate. Reservations are required so that we know how many ribs to put
on the Treager.

Greeting Nobles and Ladies. During
May, we had the privilege of visiting five
Al Kader Shrine Clubs as they honored
the players, cheerleaders, queens, co-
captains, patient Ambassadors, coaches
and parents leading up to our Annual
East – West Shrine Football Game in
Baker City. Well done to Linn County
Shrine Club, Santiam Shrine Club,
Central Oregon Shrine Club, Columbia
Country Shrine Club and Tualatin Valley
Shrine Club for hosting these great
events. Kudos as well, to Clatsop County
Shrine Club who also hosted a “Players
Dinner” which we were unable to attend
due to a schedule conflict. It was truly
inspiring to visit with all of these fine
young adults who have been selected to participate in the East – West
Oregon Shrine Football Game, not only for their abilities on the field, but
also their fine morale character. The East – West Oregon Shrine Football
Game in Baker City is just around the corner, for those of you who plan
on attending this great event in Baker City, now is the time to call the Al
Kader Office to make your hotel reservations.
This month is exciting as we are already participating in the first of four
county fairs to publicize our fraternity and our philanthropy. Under the
leadership of our Chief Rabban, Todd Weedman, we will be in the public
eye and showing the Fez. We will also lend our efforts to publicize our
great Shriners Hospital for Children System. If you are interested in
lending a hand at one of the county fairs in your area, please contact Noble
June is also exciting as we will host our initial secure video conference so
that the nobility in Hermiston, Bend and Tillamook can attend our June
Stated Meeting without having to travel to attend. We are confident that
this will be a success and hope to offer this capability to several other
locations in the future. Well done to our own High Priest & Prophet,
Noble Terry Griffith; Treasurer, Noble David Tate; Assistant Rabban, Carl
Thompson; and our superb Building Manager, Noble Rich Martin for their
efforts on this project and the recent successful test we held.
We had an absolutely fabulous evening on 19th of May as we joined with
Hillah Shriners and hosted the 2018 Potentate’s Ball at the Al Kader Shrine
Center in Wilsonville. A great evening with great friends, great fellowship
and a fine meal. Our special thank you to the Al Kader Concert Band
for providing a fantastic musical program. Guest of Honor was Noble
Skip Stanaway, Al Kader Ambassador at large & member of the Shriners
Hospital for Children Board of Trustees. Lady Lynne & I want to especially
thank the 2018 Potentate’s Ball Committee Chaired by Executive Aide I.S.
Ard Pratt & Lady Carol, Illustrious Sir Lance Lesueur & lady Bernice of
Hillah Shriners, Executive Aide Noble Herb Richardson & Lady Maureen,
Chief Aide Frank Brewington & Lady Phyllis, 1st Ceremonial Master Curtis Hanson, Noble Brian Williams, Noble Jeff
Zimmerman, and Executive Assistant Sarah Gourde
for organizing such a great event. A big thank you
to the Aide Staff who worked so very hard to make
the Potentate’s Ball a huge success.
Our next social will be on the 7th of July with the
doors opening at 3:00 pm. Our own Al Keggers
Brew Club has brewed a special ale for us to enjoy.
We will have BBQ ribs on the Treager and the
traditional picnic fare. So, put this date on your
calendar to help us celebrate. Reservations are
required so that we know how many ribs to put on

First Lady Lynn Hermanson
Here we are at the 6-month mark
of our stewardship of Al Kader
Shriners. I would like to remind
everyone; my project is to purchase
refurbished iPads for our kiddos
that are speech challenged. Your
donation to the First Lady’s Project
is needed to make these purchases. There is a huge
need at the current time to make these purchases
as soon as possible. I am asking on behalf of the
Speech Therapy Clinic at the Portland Shriners
Hospital. At each social, on the bar, you will find a
jar with my pin on a Red/White/Blue ribbon. Let
your conscious be your guide. All donations are truly
appreciated by the speech challenged KIDDOS!
I want to take a moment to thank the following
people for all their assistance in helping I.S. Art & I
stay on track with all that we do. First and foremost,
I want to thank Sarah Gourde and Janet Martin!
Without these ladies, the front of our building would
not look as inviting as it does. These ladies are so
indispensable to us! Thank you, Sarah and Janet, for
all that you do!
I would like to thank all my Divan Ladies, who work
hard to keep me on track with what we are doing for
you, the nobility and the Shrine Center.
I would like to thank are our Co-Executive Aides I.S.
Ard Pratt and Lady Carol, Herb Richardson and Lady
Maureen, Chief Aide Frank Brewington and Lady
Phyllis and all our well trained and hard-working
Aides who makes everything look so transparent.
Without your hard work, our Socials would not be as
FUN as they are!
Please keep up the great work that you do. For our
newest Shriners, to our old timers and everyone in
between and all the Ladies, if you have a question, a
suggestion, a complaint or a compliment, please do
not hesitate to reach out to I.S. Art or myself.
I.S. Art and I hope that everyone who attended the
Military Themed Pote’s Ball, enjoyed themselves and had a lot of FUN! I know we did!
I.S. Art Hermanson

Currently, we are working on a remote secure video conference call capability. I am hopeful that we can implement this system in time for our June Stated Meeting. The remote secure video conference call will allow Al Kader Nobility who normally travel far and wide, to attend our Stated Meetings, but without the travel hardship. In our initial attempt, we hope to offer this remote secure video conference call in Bend, Tillamook and Hermiston. If we are successful, we hope to expand this capability to other locations.

Greeting Nobles and Ladies. As I look
out my window, it appears that Spring has
finally arrived. The sun is shining, flowers
are starting to bloom and the windows are
open bringing in the comfortable breeze
from outside. With those signs of spring, it
is time to turn our attention to our Spring
Ceremonial that will take place on April 7th.
The Al Kader 2018 Spring Ceremonial

the Potentate’s Representative to “God’s
Country.” Noble Carey has been a valued
member of the Divan since being appointed
an Outer Guard by I.S. Bud James in 2003.
He served as First Ceremonial Master for
I.S. Bill Doherty in 2005 and Chairman of
Public Relations for I.S. Bob Walliker in 2006. Noble Carey has been our “go to
guy” on all things relating to Oregon Department of Justice rules and regulations
on gaming and raffles. His good counsel and valuable friendship have served many
Potentates over the last fifteen years, all of whom have heard him say on numerous
instances, “All is well in God’s Country.”

for the candidates & their ladies. Dinner will be at 6:00 pm, the presentation and

If you haven’t visited the Shrine Center in a while, you may notice some changes that have taken place. As you approach the entrance to the Shrine Center, please note, the new yard furniture and plants which we hope makes our Shrine Center more inviting. Kudos to Sarah, Janet and Rich for all their hard work in making these changes. When you attend an event, you will be able to HEAR the person speaking as our new audio/visual system is in place. The audio/visual initiative was started in 2017 under Illustrious Sir Ron Gamble and although it has taken almost a year, it has been worth the wait. Well done Illustrious Sir Ron!
We are also taking steps to clear the upper parking lot. At our January Stated Meeting, the Nobility voted to dispose of two of our older vehicles. Additionally, the sale of our Haunted House and the 53’ trailer was approved. With our parade season just around the corner, I hope that the additional parking in the upper lot, will make it a lot easier and safer for our parade units. Our first parade is the Heppner parade on the 17th of March. Hopefully any units who are participating in this parade have been in touch with our Director of Units, Noble Forrest Hatch. The first 2018 Unit Head & Club meeting is Thursday, March 22nd. Our parade season will be in full swing in the middle of April and Noble Forrest, along with Assistant Director of Units Noble Jay Carey, will be busy getting everything organized. Monday, March 26th is our next Stated Meeting, so please put this date on your calendar and please tell your Lady that she should attend, as there will be a “Girls Night Out” at the Shrine for her to enjoy while we are in our meeting.
Our Spring Ceremonial will take place on the April 7th. Now is the time to get your candidates petition into the office. We will host a dinner and tour of the Portland Shriners Hospital for Children for the candidates & their ladies on Friday, April 6th. Dinner will be at 6:00 pm. On Saturday April 7th, check-in for our candidates will begin at 11:00 am. The Ceremonial will begin at 1:00 pm. We will hold the Oasis at 4:00 pm, then move on to the Social at 5:00 pm. It should be an interesting event as the dinner will be provided by our very own Noble Fadi Arnaout, owner of the Mediterranean Grill.
For those of you who are still thinking about joining us on the 2018 Potentate’s Trip to Maui, time is soon running out to register. Registration for this trip closes at the end of April. On Saturday, March 31st, we will host the Annual Al Kader Easter Egg Hunt, this is a great time for us as we get to see a lot of our neighboring community that visit us. Finally, if you didn’t attend the recent Sweetheart Social, you really missed a fun time! Each of our ladies were given a rose and a small box of chocolates by their Noble, just before we enjoyed a wonderful buffet pasta meal. The music was excellent and all who attended had a great time.
For those who recently submitted articles to the Oasis and did not see their submission published, we apologize. Our contractor who maintains our web site recently changed IT service providers which should not have impacted our firstname.lastname@example.org email box. Unfortunately this change was not as transparent as it was hoped and resulted in some articles not getting to the Editor. Our sincerest apologies for this and we hope we do not experience any more problems in the future. - Es Selamu Aleikum

Already a month has gone by and it seems like it was just yesterday that we held the Installation of the 2018 Al Kader Divan. For those of you who did not have an opportunity to attend the Installation, it was indeed a gala event. I was honored to have Noble Dave McCarthy & Lady Sandy join us from Fort Worth, Texas. Noble Dave & I traveled the “Sands” together in 1978. I don’t want to simply recite all of the remarks and comments from that evening, however there is one that I must share. “Lady Lynne & I took a moment to thank Illustrious Sir Rennie Johnson & Lady Doris, who have guided us through these last six years. I am confident that Rennie was smiling down upon us with that twinkle in his eye.”
So, as I searched for inspiration on what to put to pen for the February Oasis, I was a bit perplexed. What could I add that would inspire and give thought to the Nobility & their Ladies? Should I once again remind everyone to pursue membership? Or, how about reminding all of our Nobility that they have an obligation to pay their dues in a timely manner. Or perhaps, I should provide some inspiration to the newly elected & installed Club & Unit Officers. So, as I searched for one topic to pursue, I suddenly had a moment when it flashed before my eyes. The answer was yes. All of those topics are worthy of our attention.
We need to be ever vigilant to recruit good men to our fraternity. Not only our Brother Master Masons, but also those good men we all know who have yet to ask “the question.” Bringing a good man & his lady to one of our events might just be the impetus for him to want to join. When is the last time you brought a non-mason friend to a temple, club or unit social? Is there any of our fellow Nobles who we haven’t seen in some time? If so, it is our responsibility to find out why they no longer attend? What can we do to make them want to come back & enjoy our great fraternity?
To our newly elected Club & Unit Officers, you now have the responsibility to objectively look at how you are conducting your events. If you were attending for the first time, is the meeting or social event inspiring enough to want you to come back next month? Did everyone have fun & did anyone tell you afterwards that they had a great time? If so, congratulations because you are doing it right. If not, you need to reflect on what needs to change to make it more fun.
One of the charges we vowed to take was; “exert your best endeavors to promote the true happiness of your Brother Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.” We should never lose sight of that and always strive to make our meetings & events fun, so that all who attend will want to come back again & again.
Finally, we all took an obligation when we became Shriners to keep in our heart, all the obligations of Shriners International. Part of those obligations is pay our dues. Whether it is your temple dues, club or unit dues; I remind you, that it is your obligation to pay those dues in a timely manner.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the Spring Ceremonial on April 7th, of course, with a candidate in hand.

First & foremost, I want to express my gratitude to the Al Kader Nobility for electing me Potentate for 2018. Both Lady Lynne & I are dedicated to working hard to make 2018 a fabulous fun year for all of Al Kader. I am very aware that I am your steward for a year and I promise to work diligently on your behalf. You have also elected an exceptional team in Chief Rabban Todd Weedman, Assistant Rabban Carl Thompson & Lady Feather, High Priest & Prophet Terry Griffith & Lady Debby, Oriental Guide Mark Phillips & Lady Deanna, Treasurer David Tate & Lady Linda and Recorder Dick Duer. This is a team of proven Nobles & their Ladies, who have worked diligently for the betterment of Al Kader last year and I am confident that the wisdom of the Nobility has selected the best team to continue on.
To Illustrious Sir Ron Gamble & Lady Pam, you had a fabulous 2017, which we will be hard pressed to emulate. We wish both of you only the best as you continue on in your other endeavors.
We will continue our press to recruit new members, while retaining all of our current Nobility. Unfortunately, the “Black Camel” made too many visits to Al Kader in 2017. We will pay homage to those who have gone on “to that celestial lodge” with a Necrology ceremony at our stated meeting on the 29th of January. Please make your best effort to attend as we pay our respects to those recently departed Nobles.
On Saturday the 20th of January, Al Kader will host our annual Divan, Unit Head and Club Presidents seminar. We will also welcome club and unit officers who desire to attend. For those Unit Heads & Club Presidents who are traveling from afar and desire hotel accommodations, please contact the Al Kader Office for arrangements. There will also be an informative ladies program, so I urge you to bring your lady along.
Sunday the 21st of January is Shriner’s Night at the Winterhawks. Please make plans to come out to the Moda Center & support the Portland Shiners Hospital for Children by attending this fun event.
The Al Kader Oriental Band will host their world renown Crab Feed on Saturday January 27th. Many of us will be hustling back across the mountain after attending the East/West Football Committee meeting in Bend, hopefully in time to enjoy some succulent crab & great fellowship.
Looking forward to February, I urge all of you to mark February 10th on your calendar as Al Kader will hold a Sweetheart Social honoring all of those wonderful ladies that support us throughout the year.
